Almost €1.5 million to conduct research into one of the most extreme states of matter, which exists only in stellar explosions: neutrino plasma.

With the NEPTUNE project, Damiano Fiorillo, a researcher in Physics at the GSSI – Gran Sasso Science Institute in L’Aquila, is among the winners of the prestigious ERC Starting Grant call, awarded by the European Research Council, the European Union’s leading organisation for supporting frontier research.

The NEPTUNE project ( NEutrino flavor Plasma: TUrbuleNt evolution in astrophysical Explosions ) will be carried out at GSSI under Fiorillo’s supervision. At 31, originally from Naples and a “brain gain” who has only recently returned to Italy, Damiano Fiorillo joined the doctoral school in L’Aquila this year, after conducting research in Copenhagen at the Niels Bohr Institute and in Berlin. His project has been awarded €1.495.750 over a five-year period. Of the more than 4.000 projects submitted to the ERC call, only 8.8% were selected for funding.

«NEPTUNE will develop a new way of looking at dense neutrino plasmas and the fields through which they interact» explains Damiano Fiorillo.
