Yesterday afternoon, on October 20, members of the Einstein Telescope’s Board of Governmental Representatives (BGR) met at the GSSI – Gran Sasso Science Institute in L’Aquila and visited the INFN’s Gran Sasso National Laboratories.
The visit was organized in conjunction with the periodic meeting of the BGR, the body responsible for coordinating relations between the governments of the countries involved in the Einstein Telescope project and the funding agencies, scheduled for today in Rome at the headquarters of the Accademia Nazionale dei Lincei.
Einstein Telescope, Europe’s future gravitational-wave observatory, will be one of the most important research facilities to be built in Europe in the coming years. The BGR – which includes representatives from Belgium, Croatia, France, Germany, Greece, Italy, the Netherlands, Poland, the United Kingdom, and Spain, with Austria serving as an observer country – is also the body responsible for making the final call on where the Einstein Telescope will be built, a decision expected in 2027. Italy is a candidate to host the observatory in Sardinia, in the area around the abandoned Sos Enattos mine.
