Francis Halzen, Professor at the University of Wisconsin-Madison (USA) and member of the Scientific Committee of the GSSI – Gran Sasso Science Institute, has been awarded the 2026 Nobel Prize in Physics, "for decisive contributions to the IceCube Neutrino Observatory and the discovery of high-energy neutrinos of astrophysical origin".

Professor Halzen is part of the scientific community of Gran Sasso Science Institute, being a member of the committee overseeing the scientific activities of the GSSI.

Halzen is the mind behind the IceCube Neutrino Observatory in Antarctica, the world's biggest neutrino detector, and the first one to ever catch high-energy neutrinos coming from deep space. Conceived by Halzen in the Eighties and operational since 2010, IceCube's scientific program continues to expand, with the collaboration now including more than 450 researchers from institutions in 14 countries, including the GSSI.

"Francis Halzen has led an international team of researchers and engineers who have provided us with a fantastic instrument. His tenacity and scientific vision has paved the way for a new kind of astronomy" says Mark Pearce, Chair of the Nobel Committee for Physics.
